Mitchell's intellectual dishonesty, which has been described here, may have a pretty simple explanation. He's desperate and upset over seeing his influence diminish as the blogesphere's has grown and gained credibility. Essentially, Mitchell is like a downing man who grasps at whatever he can, no matter how useless, to keep himself afloat

Indeed, E&P's "angst" over the MSM's declining power was in fact addressed on April 14th in an online E&P column by online Editor David S. Hirschman, who debated the pros and cons of the rise of bloggers and web sites. The rising popularity of both, Hirschman noted in “Creeping Democracy of Web Influences Print Coverage,” has coincided with the mainstream media’s decline.

As I noted in my own post on Mitchell, "Iran's Got Nukes! What Me Worry?", Hirschman then let loose with this revealing zinger: “So what can newspaper editors and publishers do to reclaim their power as arbiters of public taste? So far that's unclear.”

Yes, at bottom, it's all about power and influence for Mitchell -- and the fact that he and others in the MSM are losing it, along with their credibility. Oh how journalists like Mitchell, who came of age during Watergate and the Vietnam War, must rage over this
