I completely agree and wish I had said it first. We may expect a responsible court will take into account a negligible criminal history and be appropriately lenient with the erstwhile artilleryman.
Even so, it would play out so much nicer in my book if the neighboring families gathered to inspect the damage, and in the presence of this august assemblage, the stricken homeowner accepted the apology, and a promise of compensation and future safe conduct from an embarrassed and repentant Masur. In my fantasy, an intelligent and thoughtful citizenry would levy a merciful judgment on an honest mistake. The police would never have to be called over such a matter.
