The Gulf's existed for 150 million yrs give or take. If it's been seeping all that time that would mean 75 trillion barrels of oil, which is about 30 times the current estimated oil reserves for the entire planet. And the Gulf is far from the only place with natural oil seeps, they're all over the place. 500k/year from “time immemorial” would mean an awful lot of oil.
