The Power of Words

,

“One of my teachers at Columbia was Joseph Brodsky…and he said, ‘look, you Americans, you are so naïve. You think evil is going to come into your houses wearing big black boots. It doesn’t come like that. Look at the language. It begins in the language.’”

“A man may take to drink because he feels himself to be a failure, and then fail all the more completely because he drinks. It is rather the same thing that is happening to the English language. It becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts.”

— George Orwell

Remember the next time you step around a “vagrant” on the street that he is just “homeless” — i.e. the only difference between you and him is the lack of a home.
And remember the next time you see an illegal alien that he is just “undocumented” – i.e. the only difference between you and him is a little paperwork.
