My mom has one of Richard Newton Jr's paintings. She got it from one of her ex-father-in-laws back in the 1970's. She has had it ever since. She doesnt know much about it other than who painted it. I am looking for more information about it. Like the year it was painted and title. I am hoping that you can help me. Any information would help. Its of a brown horse's head with a black mane and tail, hes bridled and looking to the left. I have always been fascinated with it. So this would be a good thing for both of us. Thanks so much.

Where do you study rhetoric? All universities basically teach sophism and rhetoric today in preference to teaching virtue, but only a few openly acknowledge what they're teaching.

What do you think is the problem with expressing contempt and defiance of Islam and Jihad at the present time? It seems a very appropriate time to me.

Cheers,
David

Actually, the only reason I'm visiting this website is because I'm in a rhetoric class. We are analyzing the speech, picking out what works and what doesn't work. This was not the sort of time for Obama to comment on jihad and the various interpretations of it.

But $1,047 in stimulus money was used to buy a Toro riding mower to cut the grass at the Fayetteville, Arkansas National Cemetery. That single lawn mower was reported as saving or creating 50 jobs! Imagine what would have happened had they bought some push mowers instead.
This government has promised that they will help us by creating and managing automated medical records. I can't wait to see what those look like!

I think your perspective is a peculiar one and unsound.

Hirohito was not personally responsible, but Japan did wage aggressive war in Asia, and deliberately attacked the United States, intending the most perfunctory notice prior to the opening of hostilities. Japanese incompetence resulted in no warning preceding the attacks. The war waged by Japan was filled with brutality and what the civilized West regards as atrocities. Large numbers of Americans were killed in a war started by Japan, and we successfully reduced Japan to absolute prostration. Your view seems to suppose that we were supposed to treat Japanese culture, government, and institutions with respect. Most Americans of the WWII generation were surprised by the mildness and consideration with which MacArthur governed Japan. It is generally observed that Hirohito and most Japanese appreciated the moderation of MacArthur's rule and the reforms introduced to Japan at America's hands produced a prosperous and democratic society and a generally enthusiastic US ally.

That photo of MacArthur and Hirohito was specifically taken to humiliate the emperor and demonstrate US dominance to the Japanese people. Although Obama's bow was idiotic and embarrassing, inappropriately comparing it to this photo as an idea of "how it's done" is no less so.

Hunter S. Thompson belonged to the NRA and killed himself with a handgun.

I was obliged to delete your lengthier reply, because it was filled with obscenities. It was also lacking in substance, and had nothing in particular to do with the posting to which it was attached.

This one, too, is completely devoid of content, but at least it gives me a chance to comment on the incongruity of someone with your views calling himself "Hunter S. Thompson."

I have known about this since the late 1960s, ever since the Harold Wilson & James Callaghan regimes.

What has always puzzled me, is
a) Why did it take so long for the press to work this one out?
b) Why did the Conservatives never complain that there was the most outrageous Gerrymandering going on, which amounted to the worst national scandal we had ever seen?
c) Why did so many people in high places, and of powerful status, refuse to support Enoch Powell, and say openly that he was absolutely right?
d) Why, over the last 40 years, did so many people, in politically powerful positions, so tamely and meekly succumb to all the emotional blackmail and chicanery wrapped up in this wretched word - this wretched American import - i.e the word "Racism".

The word means nothing, when ordinary, modest-income, working-class people find themselves being pushed out of their own cities by massive influxes of immigrants, whom they simply do not want. They look on in despair as whole neighbourhoods are taken over by incomers, as house-prices soar because of greatly increased pressure of demand. Then they become totally bewildered when the very people that they expected to protect from all this, simply snipe & sneer at them, and shout "Shut up and stop being Racist".

The answer to all these puzzles is all about MONEY. All the politicians ever wanted was plenty of Arab OIL MONEY in the City of London, and plenty of rich "Asian" Businessmen paying lots of money into Labour Party funds.

The general British Public were subjected to the most massive, most scandalous con-trick there ever was, through the use of emotional blackmail and the word "Racism".
James Callaghan (that "nice" guy) was the worst of the original offenders; and the whole Labour Party has followed his treacherous lead ever since. They were all so desperate for power-at-any-price, that they were more than ready to sell our children's & grandchildren's future, in a politically & socially stable, historically single-nation country - in return for temporary power & status for themselves.

Ironically, the very section of society whose interests they claimed to represent, (the working classes of no great power or status) were the very ones whom they let down very badly.

Then they become totally bewildered when the very people that they expected to protect from all this, simply snipe & sneer at them, and shout “Shut up and stop being Racist”.

The answer to all these puzzles is all about MONEY. All the politicians ever wanted was plenty of Arab OIL MONEY in the City of London, and plenty of rich “Asian” Businessmen paying lots of money into Labour Party funds.

The general British Public were subjected to the most massive, most scandalous con-trick there ever was, through the use of emotional blackmail and the word “Racism”.
James Callaghan (that “nice” guy) was the worst of the original offenders; and the whole Labour Party has followed his treacherous lead ever since. They were all so desperate for power-at-any-price, that they were more than ready to sell our children’s & grandchildren’s future, in a politically & socially stable, historically single-nation country – in return for temporary power & status for themselves.

Ironically, the very section of society whose interests they claimed to represent, (the working classes of no great power or status) were the very ones whom they let down very badly.

You mischaracterized Weber's Gewaltmonopol des Staates, which identifies state not as the sole possessor of the right to use violence, but as its the sole source. I have commented on the article by Jill Lepore and her immeasurably more interesting sources here:

The difference between people of faith with a sense of honor and duty, and a poser...

Matthew 6

1Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

2Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

3But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

4That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

I miss him very much. I was always moved by his love for animals, and respected him for all the work he did to help raise awareness about wildlife. He is an inspiration and I hope that more people will be effected by his love and what he stands for. Also, I don't know what kind of person would think killing stingrays is what Mr. Irwin would have wanted them to do. He would have wanted the opposite. I listened to an interview shortly after his death, and a good friend of his stated that Steve always knew that if any wildlife would kill him it would be something from the ocean, because he wasn't as comfortable or knowledgeable there as he was with other animals. If anyone knows who this interview was with, please let me know! Thank you.

"Peasant under glass". I'm sure this woman and her neighbors would be horrified if the lion had been shot.

When will these dopes realize that they are wild animals? One poor woman has to go through life blind and disfigured because her friend thought it wise to keep a fully grown chimpanzee.

Love the story about St. Martin and the cloak, and glad to hear more about him. The appropriation and transformation of pagan myths and practices into European Christianity is fascinating--thanks for a great post, that adds a lot to this day honoring and remembering our bravest.

Ambinder has officially lost it. Why is it that with Obama there is always this rush to excess praise? The speech was good. "Thought in rhetoric classes?" Give me an effing break.

There is a man who built a home on a golf course I play. He built it about 20 yards off the right fairway and 190 yards from the tee box. And he goes out every day and curses the golfers who slice drives onto his property. If you don't like loud noises you might want to think twice about moving next to a ship that has been firing its cannons for 200+ years.

"you don’t need common sense when you’ve got laws."

And in one simple sentence, that police officer expresses *everything* that is wrong with public life in America today. Everything that Congress, the President, and the state legislatures do, seems to be aimed at eliminating the need or use of common sense by replacing it with laws to regulate and control every situation imaginable.

My wife, who has dual US and Australian citizenship, tried paying for groceries with a traveler's cheque. For identification, she showed her American passport - which one would think was solid gold as far as identification went. The checkout officer had apparently never seen a passport used in this way before, and asked for something else. It turned out her Australian driver's licence was OK.

My immediate reaction, which seems to be common amongst the previous commenters was something along the lines of...

Europe? “civilizing process”???
BWAH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
(*gasp*)
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
(*wheeze*)
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
(*cough*)
HA HA HA HA HA....
(*thud*)

After regaining consciousness from laughing so hard that I ran out of oxygen...

I mean...c'mon...there's no denying that we Amercans can be violent...and when we want to be, we're pretty damned good at being violent; but Europe - being more civilized than the US? The whole continent was a disease riddled meat grinder up until the last 60 years or so.

Some serious "historian" needs to add up all those war dead over the centuries and come up with an honest rate for slaughter. I don't expect the US to come out all shiny from such a comparison either, but 2 per 100K per year seems...either wishful thinking or downright fiction.

The break up of USA is not plausible as it will affect the entire world economy. With that in mind, someone might initiate it to decrease national debt, to rattle and break resurgent foreign economies and to institute a new currency to amass huge profits from the resources and union with neighboring countries, which I believe could stretch well into South America as well. USA is very powerful, and if a break up does occur, it would not be due to weakness, it will be because someone decided to trigger it for sustaining the economic super power status of United States one way or another.
