It is of course hard to say. Most of what comes from the White House are lies and continual prevarications. Then, there is the former Secretary of Defense who with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs told the Senate that they answer only to the president, NATO and the UN. If need be, Congress would be informed. So, where in the fog of lies and deception is the truth? It will certainly NOT be forthcoming. USN vet 6/70 – 6/74.

It’s a good story, but not terribly unique. Allied POWs frequently found themselves fighting alongside the Wehrmacht against the Soviets in the east. Retreat meant execution by the Gestapo, and going over to the Soviets also usually meant death, as most Red Army enlisted men could not differentiate between German and English.

Finally, the 17th SS was never an elite division, especially as it had been decimated by May of ‘45. It was a late war creation, with German officers and Romanian volksdeutsche in the ranks. The unit fought reasonably well in 1944, but had been all but exterminated by the end of that year. By May of ‘45, it would mostly have been SS administrative personnel hastily made into panzergrenadiers.

The interesting thing about the 17th SS was the fate of the “lost” II battalion 38th Infantry. Three hundred survivors of this unit were captured by the Americans shortly after Malmedy and all executed in retaliation. The mass grave was found by a construction crew in the early 1970s. West German and American authorities paid the surviving family members for their silence, in the interest of NATO solidarity. The fact that most of the men had been Romanian made the task easier.

In a free market, the degree of inequality would be determined by how unequal individual economic production was. Once you posit that that distribution should instead reflect some arbitrary notion of outcome, you invite—practically insure—pernicious distortions. Those distortions will be shaped not by economic factors, but by how much political influence one has. Who has more political influence than the Banking-Congressional cabal?

The problem with being an activist for some belief is it takes precedent over everything else. In our elected and appointed leaders this can lead to prejudice towards the majority. Black leaders/politicians are focused on black issues and harm non-blacks by their decisions. Gay politicians focus on gay issues and again to the harm of non-gays. Politicians born in another country who still hold allegiance to their home country vote for unlimitied immigration and amnesty preferring to benefit their constituency over benefitting the citizens. Of course a politician can be from one of these special interest groups and not place this interest ahead of everything else. Simply being a member of a minority group doesn’t mean they cannot work for the common good. The key is if they themselves express a belief/attitude that their particular bias is more important then anything else to them.

The reaction to Ferguson reflects the zeitgeist. When commenting on Jason Collins coming out Tony Kornheiser went so far as to say he regards “homosexual” as a slur. Given the current level of media compliance the term soon will go the way of “Negro.”

Not to be ‘too” critical but fibre art always seems to lack something… I dunno, “art” perhaps. The best fibre art I have ever seen came out of the lint collector of my dryer. But Navajo weaving is awesum and Pendelton blankets are art. I sometimes see things like this hanging in public buildings and it only serves to reinforce the belief that you cannot trust politicians and bureaucrats with our money.

My wife & I went to Chancellorsville to be there May 3, the day 150 years ago my Great Grandfather was wound while serving with the color guard of the 23rd Va Regiment, to walk where he walked as one of Jackson’s foot cavalry. We visited Ellwood where very knowledgeable volunteers describe the medical care he would have received. I was most deeply moved upon entering the NPS visitors center & discovering a display of the uniform of a man from my Great Grandfather’s unit, Company E, who died from wounds received during the battle. They enlisted the same day in Halifax County.
