Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) takes aim at a rabid dog menacing the residents of 1930s Maycomb, Alabama in “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962) with a neighbor’s Krag carbine.

I have one of these. Don’t you love that box magazine?

Pre-1898 is not covered under the Gun Control Act of 1968. The early Krags, then, could be delivered to your door. Probably aren’t, though. Saw an article recently about how they sold for two dollars or whatever into the 1930s – popular deer hunting rifle at the time. Now they’re priced in the thousands. It’s supposed to be a very nice action – I wonder why nobody has put out a line of replicas. Business opportunity!

I have a full-stock model, one of the ones purchased for $2 back in the olden days, and used for deer hunting by my Grandfather and my father. As noted, the action is very slick indeed – but this 2 lug predates the 3 lug action Mauser made popular. That third lug adds a lot of strength = safety. Long story shorter, fine for the black powder 30/40 ammo of it’s day, and a nice action…but left behind by further developments in powder, metal, etc… Still, when called upon to ‘civilize ’em with a Krag!’ I can do so.
