Out of ammunition, Sergeant Ray Holmes of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force rammed his Hurricane fighter into the tail of a German bomber headed into an attack run on Buckingham Palace. Holmes’ desparate act of gallantry happened to be caught on film and became one of the most celebrated feats of the Battle of Britain. Astonishingly, he survived.
