Yankee Doodle Closes its Doors

, ,

Those who attended Yale in the second half of the previous century will be saddened to learn that yet another landmark of their youth has succumbed to the ravages of Time. The Yankee Doodle Coffee Shop, established in 1950, closed permanently yesterday.

Hat tip to Brian Hughes.

(Tear drop). I used to work at Macy’s in the 1960s and would walk to the Yakee Doodle for lunch – or the Educated Burger, or Louis’ Lunch. I remember the great stores like Rosenbergs – J. Press, and Barrie Bootery. I think J Press is still there. I miss all that stuff – a lot!

Remember White’s on Chapel Street?

Yes, I remember White’s on Chapel Street. One Christmas I saved money (with my sisters) and we bought our mother a (sweater) knit skirt and sweater – it was a set – was very much in the style of the Co-op sweaters from the Yale Co-op. I think it cost around $80 or so back in 1964 or 1965 – a lot of money back then. I had a a tweed jacket from Whites that I think I wore until it was nothing but threads left. I miss those places. People don’t understand what great quality was sold back then. Everything is made very cheaply today… and none of it lasts. Guess that’s the economics of it though.
