Hunting With the Bath County Hounds

, , ,

89-Year-Old Huntsman Melvin Poe leads the Bath County Hounds out on a beautiful November morning (click on image for larger picture)

The Bath County Hounds are a private pack, founded in 1992, after Melvin Poe’s retirement as huntsman of Orange County, by George L. Ohrstrom to hunt his 3000-acre Fassifern Farm at Warm Springs, Bath County, Virginia.

The rolling countryside of the foothills of the Blue Ridge near Poe’s home in Fauquier County, where the Bath County Hounds hunt in the intervals between trips to Warm Springs, was hunted in the decades before WWII by the Cobbler Hunt, whose master in the early 1930s was (then) Major George S. Patton, Jr.

Who wouldn’t want to look like that and ride like that at 89?

I just found this website, and am thrilled to find Melvin Poe still with us.My niece and I stayed with him and Peggy in Nov ’92,and hunted. It was a wonderful experience. And to have his own pack again, wow, must have happened just after we left.Wonderful couple, wonderful stories from Melvin, and fabulous hunting. We came all the way from British Columbia, and it was worth it,so “hello Melvin and Peggy, hope you remember us a bit,and keep it up Melvin, bloody marvalous”!!!!.

Does the Bath County Hunt still meet? I was told there were no more meets in the area but I would love to find out more about this particular hunt!

Melvin passed away in September of 2014. The Bath County Hounds were his own private pack and came to an end with him. http://www.fauquiernow.com/index.php/fauquier_news/obituary/melvin-poe
