He’s Campaigned in 57 States, But He’s Still Weak on US Geography

, , ,

LENO: You mentioned infrastructure. Why is that a partisan issue? I live in a town, the bridge is falling apart, it’s not safe. How does that become Republican or Democrat? How do you not just fix the bridge? (Laughter and applause.)

THE PRESIDENT: I don’t know. As you know, for the last three years, I’ve said, let’s work together. Let’s find a financing mechanism and let’s go ahead and fix our bridges, fix our roads, sewer systems, our ports. [You know], the Panama [Canal] is being widened so that these big supertankers can come in. Now, that will be finished in 2015. If we don’t deepen our ports all along the Gulf — places like Charleston, South Carolina, or Savannah, Georgia, or Jacksonville, Florida — if we don’t do that, those ships are going to go someplace else. And we’ll lose jobs. Businesses won’t locate here.

I guess this has to do with studying elementary school geography in Indonesia. Can you imagine what the MSM would do to George W. Bush if he produced this kind of howler?

It’s more than geography he doesn’t know. Is he promoting the building of pipelines and refineries in those ports to take the product from “supertankers”? And what about just expanding the LOOP (Louisiana Offshore Oil Platform) which is the only location in the Eastern US that can take supertankers and was built offload them with pipelines running to the refineries.

And Construction workers may be ready to go to work but has Obama ever looked at how long a port deepening project takes to get approval, even discounting the inevitable protests and lawsuits from his base?

Besides the Canal is being widened for Europe not US trade. The post-Panamax cargo ships (to wide for the old canal) are already calling at the US West Coast ports where the containers are unloaded and put on trains or trucks and can be on the East Coast in 2-3 days. Thank you, Shipping owner Malcom McLean and engineer Keith Tantlinger. Perhaps Obama forgot about California being a coastal state and about the intercontinental railroad/highway system?

Would be an interesting exercise to go back and total all the times “Mission Accomplished” has been replayed versus “I promise to cut the budget deficit in half by the end of my first term”.

Interestingly (but not surprisingly) when the AP reported the story, they quoted the President as follows:

“If we don’t deepen our ports all along the Gulf — (and in) places like Charleston, S.C., or Savannah, Ga., or Jacksonville, Fla. — if we don’t do that, these ships are going to go someplace else and we’ll lose jobs,” Obama said.

How many times did the AP repeat the lie that Sarah Palin said she could see Russia from her home?
