My uncle got a serious but not fatal wound in the first landing at Iwo Jima. He laid in the sand for hours before getting aid but when all was said and done everyone of his fellow marines in his squad had been killed. He was lucky but never felt lucky. He couldn’t talk about it without tearing up. He was a good dad to my two cousins and a good husband to his wife but he was burdened with guilt and sorrow his whole life.
