OTs-38 Stechkin Silent Revolver

,

Guns & Fez & Waffle:

Designed by Igor Stechkin, manufactured by the KBP Instrument Design Bureau c.2002-today.

7.62×42 mm SP-4 five-round moon clips, swing-out cylinder, six o’clock barrel, integral laser sight, double action, manual safety.

A very interesting design brought to us by the Stechkin automatic pistol guy, the OTs-38 was developed from an earlier model designed for Vietnam tunnel rats, which fired tungsten birdshot rounds for some reason. This revolver’s rounds are only similar in that they are completely silent, using a low amount of gunpowder located behind a piston inside the case, meaning no gas is actually released when firing the gun, producing no sound or muzzle flash. The gun itself being a revolver also means no spent cartridges can be heard dropping on the floor.

I didn’t know this gun until today, although I can say that its system was known during the late 70s or the early 80s at least (I cannot remember on what type of firearm at this time, regretfully, but it seems to me it was used to propel some darts or explosive arrows).
However, you’ll find a very similar system conceived to arm the powerful spring of a British silent spring antitank rocket launcher designed in 1942, and named PIAT (standing for “Projector, Infantry, Anti Tank”). The spring of this rocket launcher could be armed by a piston itself powered by the gas of a blank cartridge (a 32 ACP is my recollection is good). Once the spring was thus armed, then it could be released by an all ordinary trigger, so as to push a bomb very similar to a mortar shell (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PIAT).
Otherwise, I doubt this Stechkin silent revolver could be a really efficient weapon capable to kill or even seriously wound an opponent with a single shot.

…by the way, take also a look at the “captive bolt pistol”, invented in Germany in the early 20th century, whose system is very similar too.

So, I’m not gonna be able to go down to Cabela’s and pick up fifty rounds? :-) Frankly, penetrating a steel helmet at 20 meters is quite commendable. I’ve fired .380 rounds that wouldn’t come close.
