Georgia has a similar line across the state known as the Gnat Line. South of the line, gnats are more of a problem than North. The reason for this is that south of the line is sandier soil where gnats can lay their eggs and overwinter, north of the line the soil is too clayey and rocky to allow the gnats to dig down and lay their eggs. And if you wonder why the soil in South Georgia is sandy – 100 million years ago South Georgia would have been known as the Atlantic Coast beach since sea levels were a bit higher then than now and there was no such thing as Florida.
