The Y Chromosome is Disappearing

, ,

The Conversation seems to have an explanation for how we got millennials.

The Y chromosome may be a symbol of masculinity, but it is becoming increasingly clear that it is anything but strong and enduring. Although it carries the “master switch” gene, SRY, that determines whether an embryo will develop as male (XY) or female (XX), it contains very few other genes and is the only chromosome not necessary for life. Women, after all, manage just fine without one.

What’s more, the Y chromosome has degenerated rapidly, leaving females with two perfectly normal X chromosomes, but males with an X and a shrivelled Y. If the same rate of degeneration continues, the Y chromosome has just 4.6m years left before it disappears completely. This may sound like a long time, but it isn’t when you consider that life has existed on Earth for 3.5 billion years.

I don’t think this is a genetic problem it is a social or societal problem. People react to and adjust to societal mores. Another part of the problem is our leaders and our environment. I think we would be a different country if Churchill was our leader and a large and aggressive army was assaulting our shores. Or to put that another way I think we are picking poor leaders, wimps, people who would “play it safe” rather than be bold. I just five minutes ago saw Senator Susan Collins on TV and I am repulsed by wimpy style and lack of courage and honesty. But, she is not unique in congress. Our leaders suck. The only reason we can get away with this combination of bad leaders and wimpy men is because the world (our world) is safe. If things begin to go bad this must change it it will doom us. Ironically I also believe our temerity is exactly what is likely to make things go bad.

Fox News:

“State Department spending $592,500 to ‘explore gender identities of boys and men in Kenya'”

The State Department announced a new $600,000 taxpayer-funded study that suggests “ideals of masculinity” in Kenya are contributing to terrorism.

The department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism is seeking a nonprofit group to “explore gender identities of boys and men in Kenya.” The grant proposal states that men being “tough, heterosexual, aggressive, unemotional, and achieving” can make them vulnerable to joining Islamic extremist groups.

The theory of evolution would suggest that traits that are no longer needed or considered valuable for survival tend to die out. It is (sadly) true that your family’s survival no longer depends much on your ability to go out and kill something for dinner.
