New York Times editorialist Nicholas D. Kristof (Joe and Valerie Wilson’s breakfast partner) quotes a Berkeley professor who claims to have identified yet another.

As we pump out greenhouse gases, most of the discussion focuses on direct consequences like rising seas or aggravated hurricanes. But the indirect social and political impact in poor countries may be even more far-reaching, including upheavals and civil wars — and even more witches hacked to death with machetes.

In rural Tanzania, murders of elderly women accused of witchcraft are a very common form of homicide. And when Tanzania suffers unusual rainfall — either drought or flooding — witch-killings double, according to research by Edward Miguel, an economist at the University of California, Berkeley.

There is some spectacular irony implicit in this particular accusation. The enlightened portion of mankind knows that the persecution of alleged witches has always taken the form of the bringing of false accusations of responsibility for untoward events through mysterious and preternatural agency against the innocent by unethical and deluded people seeking to benefit personally by gaining prestige and/or power thereby.

Which is, of course, precisely what leftists do when they point to the modern industrial economy and the citizens of the developed countries and accuse them of altering the climate of the earth.

We don’t need to travel to Tanzania to observe witch-hunting in action. Plenty of that activity is conducted right here at universities like Berkeley and in the pages of the New York Times.

One of my favorite terms when blogging is:

Through the prism of political ideology

I can think of no better example than this sentence (empasis mine):

“The enlightened portion of mankind knows that the persecution of alleged witches has ALWAYS taken the form of the bringing of false accusations of responsibility for untoward events through mysterious and preternatural agency against the innocent by unethical and deluded people seeking to benefit personally by gaining prestige and/or power thereby.”

In other words, rather than the superstitious villagers burning the witch because they feared she had brought some plague upon them, they ALWAYS did it strictly for personal power and prestige? In other words, they actually thought at the time:

“Wow, after this burning, my village power and prestige is really going to go up!”

Is that what you’re saying?

Or did you simply warp your sweeping statement regarding a bunch of superstitious villagers into a political encapsulation merely so that you could then say:

“Which is, of course, precisely what leftists do…”

and then go on from there, making your ideological point?

I think you need to grab a sleeping bag and go camp out in the desert for a week by yourself. It appears to me that you’ve lost your central point of focus. When one takes the actions of a bunch of 16th century witch-burning villagers and says things like, “…seeking to benefit personally by gaining prestige and/or power thereby”, then one is truly seeing history through the prism of modern political ideology.

It apparently never occurred to you that they might have burned the witches simply because they thought they were witches.

Rules:

– You may bring along any ‘creature comforts’ you like, like air mattresses, cots, etc, or even a comfy RV.

– You may NOT, however, bring along anything that could be labeled “entertainment”. This would include the TV, laptop, MP3 player, and yes, even books.

The process will not work if you have something to do. You have to get to the point where you feel “thoroughly bored” before the next step can take place. That would, of course, be focusing inward, and the mind will automatically start ratcheting back and realigning values and priorities. From so afar, you’ll see how many of your values are city-bred and mean so little, and you’ll become aware that your next breath and the sun on your face mean more than you ever knew.

So for clarity’s sake, I really needed to have differentiated the active leadership of the mob (which acquires power and prestige by witch-finding or regulating greenhouse gas emissions) from the passive membership of the mob (which credulously follows)?

I don’t see how camping out in the desert would convert me into believing in either the existence of an active witch cult in 16th century Europe or in the efficacy of witchcraft.

You aren’t Pennsylvania Dutch, are you?

Found this via a “warmlist,” also.

A mob willingly follows the least plausible explanation they have no proof against. This is essentially the “big lie” theory of propaganda as shown in Hitler’s actual case study of propaganda. It also worked for the Crusades, witch hunts, Romans killing Christians, Communists taking over countries, etc. Global warming is just the latest such thing. Even though the earth has actually gotten COOLER in the last 12 months, that’s an “anomaly” because so many people are so rapt with the lie. Of course, if the earth gets cooler for another year or two in a row, we’ll go back to the same climate alarmists we had in the 1970’s who were promoting the idea that we are headed into another ice age.

The bottom line is that we will never have a cleaner planet while such hyperbole clouds people’s minds (OMG! It’s the end of the world!) and has us making irrational choices about what is pollution and what is not. The plants don’t seem to mind a little extra CO2, but meanwhile, we are focused on “carbon credits” and reducing CO2 while mercury pours into our fish supplies and we release enough methane to make the atmosphere flammable (see, this is how hyperbole starts – but we release a lot of methane and it’s more harmful than CO2).
