George Washington’s Birthday

,

John Ward Dunsmore, The First Gentlemen of Virginia, Fraunces Tavern Museum

The memory of George Washington is still strong today in the country of the Blue Ridge, whose passes he crossed so often, and in the great Valley whose lands he surveyed and in which he hunted.

We hunted ourselves just yesterday in the near vicinity of the White Post which Lord Fairfax caused to be erected some two and half centuries ago to direct gentlemen traveling through the wilderness to his hospitality at Greenway Court. Virginians today ride over the same fields that Washington did in pursuit of descendants of the same foxes.
