I can really identify with this as a former (but cured) programmer. I remember being somewhat bored and trying to write COBOL programs in a single sentence/paragraph. (for those people under the age of 40 who don’t know what COBOL is there isn’t enough time and words here to explain it.) The problem is with all the “if then” and “else” statements needed to include all of the requirements of the program.
FORTRAN brought the opposite challenge; that is trying to write the shortest program with multiple inner loops to accomplish the job.
Either way it tended to create bugs, was hard to read and even harder to fix.
