I’m 66. Hitchhiked back and forth and up and down the country from ‘69-77.
When I’d been at home for a while in Oregon and start to become fearful about hitching anywhere much less Montana or Quebec City because of TV news I’d take the cure
I’d screw my courage to the sticking point and step back out on the ramp. Usually it was like connecting w/a great chain of extended family and friends that passed me along from one to another.
Yes, once in a great while someone would give me the willies, but that was invariably my thinking and not theirs. When I combine the people I met in those travels w/American movies from the 30s and 40s – I love us and it is very hard to witness modern antagonism
