1915 Photograph

, , ,

A rather moving original color photograph of a British family inspecting dead sea birds along a beach near the Margate Cliffs in Kent. The birds were killed by first war-time use of poison gas by the Germans in the Second Battle of Ypres, 22 April — 25 May, 1915. There were roughly 60,000 British casualties. German casualties were around 35,000. The Germans gained three miles of ground.

I wonder what kind of a photograph this is. In 1915 there were no “chromogenic” (color film to dye image) processes. It would have to be either a hand-colored B/W print (my guess) or an Autochrome, which was a kind of B/W film coated with microscopic colored starch particles and developed to a direct positive. It is possible to make sets of color separation negatives through red, blue and green filters, but that would not work with moving subjects like surf and animals.
