A List of Things Lost

, , , ,

Eight actually survived.

Henri Lefebvre (1901-1991) was another French Marxist termite, gnawing at the roots of Civilization and producing numerous volumes filled with pretentious jargon in the distinctive manière française.

Even a blind pig, as the saying goes, occasionally finds a truffle, and Lefebvre did produce the highly amusing, posthumously published, Les Unités perdue (2004), translated by David L. Sweet as The Missing Pieces (2014), 83 pages listing belle-lettres and works of art lost through the vagaries of time and chance.

One (partially erroneous) example:

The sixteen drawings offered by Amadeo Modigliani to his lover Anna Akhmatova were “smoked” by the Red Guards, who used them as cigarette paper.

Sad News: One of President John Tyler’s Grandsons Has Died

, ,

John Tyler (1790-1862), President of the United States, 1841-1845, served in the Congress of the Confederacy, 1861-1862.

Mental Floss:

Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Jr., one of the two surviving grandchildren of President John Tyler, passed away on September 26, 2020, at age 95. His death occurred 175 years after his grandfather left the White House in 1845.

If you know one fact about the 10th President of the United States, it’s likely that his grandchildren have survived well into the 21st century. This was a result of the Tyler men fathering children late in life.

Mais elle était du monde,
où les plus belles choses
Ont le pire destin,
Et rose elle a vécu ce que vivent les roses,
L’espace d’un matin.

Consolation à Monsieur du Périer, François de Malherbe (1555-1628)

Hat tips to Madame Scherzo and Vanderleun.
