Summing Up Obamacare

Stuart Schneiderman quotes investment advisor Dennis Gartman:

Let’s get this straight. We’re going to be ‘gifted’ with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don’t, which purportedly covers at least ten million more people without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn’t understand it, passed by a Congress that didn’t read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a president who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn’t pay his taxes, for which we’ll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that’s broke!!

This whole fight is absolutely amazing to me. We’re ignoring the core health issue.

We have a tendency in America to argue for or against a concept based on our own personal philosophy or view of the world, what advances our personal interests, or the interests of our party, family, organization, or region. Perhaps viewing the issue from a management or systemic perspective might result in innovative approaches to the issue. The American national mindset, citizen philosophy, lack of citizen motivation to be proactively healthy, and governance model make the socialization of health care in America very problematic, particularly at this point in time. A country needs to know its limitations.

When all of the incentives are structured to reward waste and abuse, you will get more waste and abuse. That happens in today’s third-party prepayment system. Obamacare simply adds to that another layer of complexity and more incentives for waste. The incentives in any government bureaucracy are mostly related to increasing headcount and budget. Why would you expect anything else to happen?
