Whole Foods: Just Like Heaven (Full of Self-Righteous People)Humor, Whole FoodsKelly MacLean offers a cynic’s description of the Whole Foods shopping experience.
I used to shop at Whole Foods in Foster City and in Menlo Park. I’d always marvel at how a loaf of bread, a bag of apples, and a piece of meat somehow mysteriously invariably added up to over $200 at the Whole Foods register, while at my next stop, Trader Joe’s, I’d have trouble racking up a total of a hundred dollars even with two cases of Two Buck Chuck in my shopping cart. 18 Sep 2013
A Boy Named HumiliationHistory, New England, Onomastics, Puritanism, PuritansJoseph Norwood, at Slate, admires the religiously enthusiastic Onomastic customs of Puritan New England. My personal favorite Puritan name is If Christ Had Not Died For Thy Sins Thou Shouldst Be Damned Forever Barebones. Even after these kinds of expressive of over-the-top religious sentiments personal names went out of fashion, Puritan New Englanders still continued naming their children, right up into the early 20th Century, in colorful and distinctive ways. I actually used to know a Reverdy Whitlock. But my favorite new era Puritan name, dating from the late 18th century, would have to be Epaphroditus Champion. 18 Sep 2013
Lab el Baroud (“The Gunpowder Play”)Guns, Morocco
Sir Terence Clark writes: Morocco has some amazing weapons still in common use. These muzzle-loading rifles with their silver chased barrels are used in the Fantasia [a traditional exhibition of horsemanship in the Maghreb performed during cultural festivals and to close Berber wedding celebrations], when a group of horsemen charge full tilt at the audience and at the last minute stand up in their stirrups, drop the reins, swing their rifles around in a circle and fire blanks into the ground with a deafening crash before pulling up short in a cloud of dust. 17 Sep 2013
Another Shooting Incident and Liberals Go After Law-Abiding Gun Owners AgainGun Control, Left ThinkWe’ve just had another mass shooting, this time involving a guy with a record of gun offenses using several firearms which were undoubtedly illegal in the jurisdiction in which the shootings occurred to commit murders (which are against the law everywhere), so naturally the left is once again taking advantage of public outrage at criminal violence to provide the impetus for legislation aimed at curtailing gunownership by law-abiding citizens. At Ricochet, ExUrban Kevin last night was already expressing annoyance at being blamed and potentially penalized for the actions of some whackjob.
