Tweet of the Week

, , ,

No link, the author (wussy wimp!), finding himself under fire, deleted the tweet.

The sanctimonious left, represented by HuffPo, Salon, the Atlantic, &c. had a collective cow over liberal Time journalist Michael Grunwald’s Saturday tweet, which simply endorsed one more example of Big Government activism.

Grunwald’s employer released this statement:

Michael Grunwald posted an offensive tweet from his personal Twitter account that is in no way representative of TIME’s views. He regrets having tweeted it, and he removed it from his feed.

And Grunwald himself groveled at Twitter:

It was a dumb tweet. I’m sorry. I deserve the backlash. (Maybe not the anti-Semitic stuff but otherwise I asked for it.)

Myself, I paraphrased Grunwald’s tweet on Facebook last night, telling two liberaltarian friends who were indignant about the British government detaining Glenn Greenwald’s catamite for nine hours, that I can’t wait to write a defense of the drone strike that takes out Glenn Greenwald.

Very Large Catfish

Blind and 56-years-old Sheila Penfold in 2009 set a record by catching and releasing (after a hug) a 97 kg/214 lb Wels catfish in the River Ebro near Barcelona.

The following year Penfold made a second world record with the catch of a 192 lb albino catfish. Daily Mail

Handguns Used in the Warsaw Uprising

, ,

Pistols used in the Warsaw Uprising, 1 August — 2 October 1944, Muzeum Powstani Warszawskiego.

The Polish resistance inflicted more than 27,000 German casualties and destroyed 650 vehicles (including 310 armored), 22 artillery guns, and one aircraft.

The most common handgun, naturally enough, seems to have been the Russian Nagant Model 1895 revolver, but at least one lucky Polish fighter evidently had a US Model 1911 .45 (lower left) and there are two Smith & Wesson Model 10 “Victory” Models on the right.

Both Fell to Their Deaths

, , , ,

Gallery

The dead mountain lion and bighorn sheep were found on a closed road in Glacier National Park. Both evidently fell from somewhere very high on the cliffs above and to the right during the struggle which took place when the lion attacked the ram. The dead lion’s mouth can be seen to contain a large clump of the ram’s hair.

The Imgur commentator confused the bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) with a mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus)

Facebook commentators were quoting Tolkein: “Until at last, I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside.”

The Conspicuous Absence of a Policy on Egypt

, , ,

Richard Fernandez is worried that Putin might grab Egypt while Barack Obama bicycles and golfs on Martha’s Vinyard and his administration dithers over the decision to support secularism and the Egyptian Army or radical Islam, democracy, and the Muslim Brotherhood. Decisions, decisions.

So Obama remains hunkered down in Martha’s Vineyard, emerging periodically from his vacation home, like a cuckoo from a clock, to make a statement no one appears to hear, playing for time. No one in the Beltway seems to know what line to take. Shall they restore democracy in Egypt by supporting the Muslims Bros, knowing they too will take their revenge on the generals and the Copts? Suspend aid to the Egyptian military and open the door to Russia, who might do a hat trick and scoop up Saudi Arabia into the bargain?

Choices. Choices. What happened to the good old days when one could vote “present”? The Beltway is reading the tea leaves for a sign. And all they’re getting is Jay Carney.

I’m not worried. Frankly, I think Putin would do a much better job.
